U5 Program

Organization

The U5 program consists of one day per week of the Jamboree One with one program.  Jamboree One with One is the combination of two different formats that, put together, provides the best possible introduction to soccer for our youngest players.  In AYSO soccer, a jamboree means that groups are formed on a weekly basis depending on how many players attend a given session.  One with One refers to the concept that each player will have a parent (or other adult) working with them on the field.

This program is different from the U6 program, where head coaches are assigned and formal practices and games take place.  The U5 program is geared to introduce parents and children to soccer in a more informal setting, letting them have the fun experience without the pressure of a normal game experience.

Each session will be led by a Master Coach, who will introduce a game/activity that will apply a certain skill or part of the game,  They will explain and demonstrate to help parents and players understand the activity.  Each pair (player/parent) will then  attempt the activity while the Master Coach circulates between pairs providing specific help or suggestions so that the activities are performed as intended.  Then the Master Coach will bring the parents and players back together as a group and recap what was done, and introduce the next game/activity.

Each Jamboree session will end with a 20 minute short-sided game (3v3).  During the game, one parent from each group will be assigned to act as the game supervisors of the week.  These parents will be requested to keep the game going.  Most importantly, the players should be allowed to play without coaching or teaching as this experience is designed to expose them to soccer, not to begin developing them.  The goal is to allow the players to enjoy the activity, and let the game be the teacher!

Set-Up

Each player will receive a uniform, since it is fun to get dressed up for "the big game".  Each player will need to bring a #3 soccer ball, shin guards, and appropriate shoes (tennis shoes or soccer shoes are fine) to every session, as well as bring a bottle of water for break-time.  At this age there is no need to spend a lot of money on soccer equipment.

Each player will need to be accompanied by at least one parent.  Parents should come dressed appropriately to help their player practice the skills during each training activity.

In case of severe weather, make-up sessions will automatically be held as follows:

BU5    The following Monday from 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm at Clinton River Fields
GU5    The following Wednesday from 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm at Clinton River Fields

The schedule includes 12 sessions (6 in the fall and 6 in the spring).  Re-schedules will be made only in cases of severe weather.  Like all our other AYSO age divisions, re-schedules will not occur for any other reason.

You are encouraged to come to the field for each session, as the determination to cancel a session will be based on the weather at the field location, as opposed to weather near your home.

A U5 Program session will automatically be cancelled if a tornado watch or warning is in effect for Macomb County within 30 minutes prior to session start time.  For example, if a tornado watch or warning for Macomb County expires at 1:30 pm, and the U5 session is scheduled to start at 2:00 pm, the session will occur.

Any information updates will be posted on the home page of this website.

Questions

  • Is the U5 program new?
Yes - this program was approved by AYSO National in 2004, and is being rolled out by many Regions (including Region 190).

  • Who can participate in the U5 program?
Boys and girls who are at least 4 years of age as of July 31 of the year the season starts.

  • Why is the U5 program different from the U6 program?
The objective of the U5 program is to provide young players and their parents with a "pressure free" introduction to the beautiful and simple game of soccer.  At this age the players should be exposed to soccer by playing simple, fun activities and games that require little to no practice, and a minimal time commitment.  There are also significant social, emotional and physiological differences between U5 and U6 players.

  • Why are the boys and girls program separate?
This is per AYSO National recommendations.

  • Why can't my 4 year old play in U6?
This program is geared towards introducing our younger players to the game of soccer.  Region 190 has never offered a program for this young age group.  All 4 year olds who wish to play in Region 190 will be placed into the U5 age division (no exceptions).  All players who turn 5 years of age as of July 31 will be placed in the U6 age division.

  • What do I do if I do not want to participate?
As always, Region 190 offers a full refund upon request for any players wishing to withdraw from our program.  However, this request must be received prior to the start of the season.  For details on the refund request procedure, and the start of season deadline, please visit the "Registration" page of this website.

  • Who do I contact with more questions?
If you have further questions regarding this program, please email the U5 Program Coordinator by clicking here.
